The Henrico NAACP sponsored a Teen Substance Abuse Awareness Forum to provide information about drug abuse and to facilitate a discussion about teen substance use and the opioid epidemic.
The forum was hosted by Quioccasin Baptist Church, Henrico VA, Rev. Dr. Theodore Brown, Pastor.
The Honorable Judge Randall Johnson, Jr., Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, 14th Judicial District of Virginia discussed why he worked to establish Henrico County’s first Juvenile Drug Court.
Senator Siobahn Dunnavant, Virginia State Senate 12th District and a medical doctor, gave an excellent update on the 2017-2018 legislation affecting healthcare and the opioid epidemic.
Commonwealth Attorney Shannon Taylor discussed legal aspects of the opioid epidemic.
Professor Tricia Smith Ph.D., Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Biology, an expert on the biology of drugs and author of the book “Cells on Smack” gave an excellent presentation on how drugs affect the brain.
Officer R. Ransom, Virginia Department of Corrections, made the audience aware of resources available to Virginians suffering with Substance Use Disorder.
